It is an important game for both sides as rock bottom Sunderland take on champions Manchester United, who themselves have experienced a difficult start to the season.
Kevin Ball remains in temporary charge of the Black Cats as they continue to look for a permanent successor to Paulo Di Canio. Last time out he saw his side beaten by a superior Liverpool, but there were some encouraging signs, especially on the wing as Brendan Rodgers’ side held on nervously at times in the second half.
Much of the pressure will be on David Moyes and Manchester United after a disappointing run of results. Defeat to West Bromwich Albion was unexpected, and it was deserved as they were second best for long periods of the encounter. They did earn a good result in Ukraine on Wednesday, but this is now a must-win game with Man Utd already eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
Sunderland are still without Steven Fletcher Andrea Dossena and Wes Brown, but Fabio Borini could be handed a start after being ineligible for the defeat to Liverpool.
David Moyes may continue to make changes to his line-up, with Rio Ferdinand, Nani, Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez and Ashley Young all pushing for a return.
