Gustavo Poyet takes charge of his first game as Sunderland boss as the Black Cats travel to the Liberty Stadium to face Swansea City.
Swansea have made a patchy start to the new season, with only goal difference keeping them above the relegation zone following defeat at Southampton last time out. However, they were handed a tough start, having already played four of last season’s top seven, and now the onus will be on them to start picking up points against some of the less fancied teams.
Poyet, despite the success he enjoyed at Brighton & Hove Albion, faces a mammoth task to keep Sunderland up, with the side lying rock bottom, already six points from safety. The Uruguayan will be hoping to make a similarly flying start to his two most recent predecessors, Martin O’Neill and Paulo Di Canio, with the pressure very much on his shoulders to achieve immediate results given the club’s desperate situation.
The Swans will still be without captain Ashley Williams, while Ben Davies is a doubt. Jonathan de Guzman, Pablo Hernandez and Michel Vorm should all be fit enough to play a part after respective injuries.
Poyet is handed a boost by the return of Steven Fletcher from a shoulder injury. Wes Brown is pushing for a return after a long spell on the sidelines, although Ki Sung-Yeung is ineligible to face his parent club.
