Many talented players from below the Premier League are being tipped as potential stars of the future, and are reportedly being targeted by clubs in the top flight. Could any of these five stars of the Football League be heading for the big time in the not-too-distant future?
Since breaking into the first-team at Derby County shortly before the end of the 2011-12 season, midfielder Hughes has caught the eye with a series of impressive displays, which have led to speculation linking him with a number of Premier League clubs. Overall, he has scored five goals in 55 games for the Rams, and is part of the England U-21 team.
The tricky winger has launched his career since joining Blackpool in 2011, scoring 30 goals in 97 appearances. Also a member of the England U-21s, he came so close to a move to newly-promoted Cardiff City in the summer, but decided against it. However, he still looks certain to make the step-up, due to his wonderful performances in the Championship.
It is becoming a breakthrough season for the 20-year-old Leyton Orient star, who has scored three goals in helping his side to the top of League One. Rumours have also been circulating that Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas is lining up a January bid for Odubajo, so that is one to watch out for.
It is quite surprising that Jordan Rhodes has yet to play at the highest level, given that he is arguably the most prolific natural goalscorer below the Premier League. A combined total of 118 goals in 203 appearances for Huddersfield Town and current club Blackburn Rovers suggests that he is a Premier League striker in the making.
The Coventry City youngster has made a flying start to the League One season, currently the division’s top scorer with 10 goals from 11 games. That tally is all the more impressive given that it is his first season as a first-team regular, so could be on the radar of some Premier League sides, especially if he maintains his excellent form.
