Tottenham’s Townsend can be England’s Robben, believes Redknapp

Harry Redknapp has urged Roy Hodgson to throw Andros Townsend in for England’s crucial World Cup qualifiers next week, comparing the Tottenham winger to Bayern Munich’s Dutch superstar Arjen Robben, the Daily Mail has reported.

Redknapp, who took the 22-year-old on loan at QPR last season and was previously manager at White Hart Lane, believes Townsend should have been given a chance for England.

Townsend was called up to face Montenegro and Poland, having been an unused squad member last month against Ukraine and Moldova, but Redknapp says the winger is ready for his international debut.

If you look at Arjen Robben, Andros Townsend is the closest thing we have produced to him,” continued Redknapp. “I’m not saying he is Robben yet, he is not, but he is very similar. He plays on the right, dribbles well, runs at people, gets shots at goal. I think he could be fantastic on that big pitch at Wembley, a real threat.

Wide man Townsend has caught the eye with some impressive performances this season for Spurs, and Redknapp believes his lack of international experience wouldn’t faze him. “It wouldn’t bother him in the slightest. He is a very focused and determined lad who wants to do well,” added Redknapp.

I took him on loan last year and that was probably the making of him. He showed everybody what he could do, playing Premier League football on a regular basis. He was outstanding for us, has gone back to Tottenham and is keeping big-name players out of the side on merit.

I watched him against Chelsea last week and I’ve never seen anyone give Ashley Cole a more difficult time. He’s a world-class left back but Andros gave him as difficult a game as he has had.

Townsend, 22, has represented England at Under-21 level since the age of 15, making 18 appearances altogether for the international side. The winger has been shipped out on loan numerous times throughout his career at Spurs, having spent periods at Yeovil, Leyton Orient, Ipswich Town, Millwall, Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers, and Milton Keynes Dons.
