Wenger blames Arsenal defensive errors for Chelsea cup defeat

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has pointed the finger at his side’s defending for the reason why Chelsea were victorious in the Capital One Cup meeting between the Premier League’s top two, Sky Sports has reported.

Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium with goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata, the first coming after Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson miscued an attempted header back to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. The ball dropped short and Azpilicueta was able to beat Fabianski to it and prod past the on-rushing Pole.

Arsenal had been in an attacking position with a corner moments earlier but Chelsea broke quickly and the Gunners could not organise their back-line in time, with Jenkinson’s error compounding matters and gifting the visitors the lead.

Wenger feels that Arsenal’s performance was of a decent level in other areas of the pitch but lacking in their defensive third. “We played at a very good pace, what happened is that we were a bit naive in some situations because some players lack experience,” Wenger said.

We played with a good attitude, determination and pace, overall it was a tight game that was decided by one or two opportunities on Chelsea’s side,” the Frenchman added. “They exploited our mistakes.

Wenger went on to say that Chelsea’s second goal, from Mata, came somewhat against the run of play. “They defended well and could counter-attack, we had a good spell in the second half and the first time they came out they scored. It was a great goal but overall it was a tight game.

Arsenal are currently top of the league table on 22 points from their opening nine games, with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea two points behind. Arsenal host Liverpool in the next round of fixtures while Chelsea travel to Newcastle.
