Two of the Premier League’s top three, leaders Arsenal and surprise package Southampton, meet on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal suffered their first setback since the opening day of the season when they lost at Manchester United before the international break, a result which saw their lead at the top of the Premier League cut to two points, with only five separating the top eight. This looks set to be a tough game, and another test of their title credentials as the Gunners look to rediscover the form that delivered wins against Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.
If Southampton win by two or more goals here and Liverpool fail to triumph in the Merseyside derby, Mauricio Pochettino will have guided the club to the top of the Premier League in what has been a sensational start. In their last game, they gave arguably their most complete performance yet, as Hull City were dispatched 4-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium, and since then, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez have both been given their England debuts.
Theo Walcott may return in time to face his former club after two months out of action, while Lukas Podolski is also nearing a full recovery. Tomas Rosicky and Per Mertesacker have recovered from illness, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Abou Diaby and Yaya Sanogo are still out.
Southampton have an almost fully-fit squad to choose from, and not many changes are expected from the win over Hull. Guillermo Do Prado is their only player on the sidelines.
