The Blues have made an impressive recovery in Europe since Tuesday’s opponents caused a shock in September by pulling off a deserved win at Stamford Bridge on match day one. A comfortable victory at West Ham United on Saturday saw Jose Mourinho’s side move back up to third in the Premier League table, following two games without a win. After disappointing showings against Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion, Frank Lampard and Oscar inspired Chelsea to a convincing win which bared some of the hallmarks of Mourinho’s first spell in charge.
Basel have failed to kick on from their win at Chelsea, failing to win any of their previous three Group E games, a sequence which leaves them four points off top spot. Should they lose this game and Schalke defeat Steaua in the other match, the Swiss champions will find themselves in the Europa League.
Fernando Torres has recovered from injury for Chelsea and could play, although David Luiz misses out. Andre Schurrle, Juan Mata and Willian could all earn recalls.
