Jose Mourinho has said Chelsea are a better team now than when they lost in the Champions League to Basel in September, Sky
The teams meet again on Tuesday and a victory for the Blues would guarantee qualification for the next round of the competition, and in the much-coveted top spot. The last time the two played each other, at Stamford Bridge, Basel recorded a surprise 2-1 win, but Chelsea have not been beaten in Europe since.
Basel, meanwhile, haven’t won in Europe since the victory in London, losing once and drawing twice and Mourinho believes the pressure is on the Swiss side. “If somebody has to feel the pressure, it’s not us,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
“They are under pressure and we are not,” Mourinho continued. “We can finish the job to qualify and Basel, even if they win, have to play a last final at Gelsenkirchen. For them, the situation is difficult. This shows clearly that, after the first match, we did our job and they didn’t do theirs.
“This Chelsea is better than the Chelsea that played at Stamford Bridge,” the Portuguese added. “Hopefully we can continue the good run we’ve had in the Champions League and finish the job.”
Mourinho has twice been victorious in the Champions League, claiming the trophy first with Porto in 2004, and then with Inter in 2010. No manager has won the tournament three times with three different clubs.
