Frank Lampard believes finding consistency will be crucial to Chelsea’s Premier League title challenge, Sky
Jose Mourinho’s side dispatched West Ham 3-0 on Saturday evening, with Lampard claiming a brace against his former side, taking Chelsea to within four points of league leaders Arsenal. Chelsea are third, level on points with Liverpool, but a place further back on goals scored.
“Nobody has caught fire except perhaps Arsenal and we are in touching distance of them,” Lampard said. “We are in a position where we can say ‘Yes, we want to improve and challenge to win the league’. I think we are in a good spot to do that.
“The talent in the squad is there and the consistency and spirit and desire and mentality has to be there. We have to do that every week,” the veteran added. “If we can do it over 10 games and put a real run of wins together then maybe we will scare other teams.
“But at the moment, everybody is in the mix and nobody has pulled away, so we have to try to put that run together. We have to make sure as a squad we have to work towards one goal.”
Lampard cited performances away from Stamford Bridge as a potential reason for why Chelsea are not vying more closely with the Gunners for top spot. The victory at Upton Park was only Chelsea’s second on the road in the Premier League and Lampard admits the team can do better. “Our away form has not been great,” he said.
“That is probably what has kept us off the top of the league. If you are going to challenge for the league you have got to win away from home regularly. We need to start doing that.”
