Chelsea to resume striker hunt in January

Jose Mourinho will again attempt to add a new striker to his Chelsea squad when the transfer window opens in January, ESPN has reported.

Mourinho has Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and summer signing Samuel Eto’o already at hand but is said by the Daily Mail to be in the market for a fourth, having loaned Romelu Lukaku to Everton and Victor Moses to Liverpool.

The manager’s current crop have scored just once in the Premier League between them this season, with Demba Ba not on target in the league since March. Torres is the only one of the three to have netted in the league, against Manchester City.

Torres started Chelsea’s weekend defeat to Newcastle but was replaced after an hour, with Eto’o coming on instead, but the former Barcelona and Inter forward was unable to make much of an impact.

It is claimed that Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is the player to whom Chelsea will turn first as the Poland international runs down his contract the Westfalenstadion. But Lewandowski, like long-standing target Wayne Rooney, would be ineligible for the Champions League, assuming Chelsea are still in the competition after Christmas.

Chelsea currently top Group E and face Bundesliga side Schalke at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Schalke are level on points with Chelsea while Basel are two behind on four, with Steaua Bucharest bottom of the group with a single point.
