Azpilicueta is usually a right-back but has deputised for Cole against Schalke in the Champions League and West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League as Cole recovers from a rib injury. The Spaniard has been widely praised for his performances and was singled out by Mourinho for his displays, but the manager has assured Cole the position is his in the long-run.
“I can make mistakes, I can be unfair, but I always give a lot of thought to my decisions,” Mourinho said. “I decided for Azpilicueta to play against Schalke (in a 3-0 Champions League win) and he was fantastic. On Saturday he was very good again.
“Ashley is a top professional, he is a fighter,” Mourinho continued. “He has to work hard, to fight hard because the place (in the team) is his place.
“Of course it is not Azpilicueta’s best position, and it is not a position where Ashley can think that he is in trouble now. No, he has to just to work and fight and the position is there waiting for him, no problem.”
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Marseille last summer and has made 57 appearances for the Blues, nine of them coming this season. His first Chelsea goal was also scored earlier in the campaign, in the 2-0 Capital One Cup win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
