Everton defender Leighton Baines believes that the Toffees cannot afford to take their foot off the gas after a positive start to the new season, ClubCall
Everton took a point from their encounter with fellow top-four rivals Tottenham on Sunday, in a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. The draw continues their run of positive results at home, but three points would have taken the Merseyside club second in the table.
The England international is fully aware that their good form at Goodison is crucial to a top-four push, but also believes that the side must stop dropping points on the road if they are serious about a bid for Champions League football.
The Blues currently occupy seventh place in the Premier League, but such is the nature of the division this season, that they are only one point off second-placed Chelsea. Baines said: “Hopefully we can start winning a few more. It is quite congested in the top six or seven and a win can do a lot for you. We have to stay with the pack and keep winning games.”
Everton are unbeaten in the league at Goodison Park since December 30 and the left-back knows they must use this home form as a platform to push forward.
He added: “I think we have to make it so that other people don’t enjoy coming here. If Tottenham and Chelsea are not getting any results from us here then it will make other teams think twice about how they approach the game.”
Everton will be looking to pick up three points on the road this weekend as they face basement side Crystal Palace on Saturday.
