Germany’s Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer and Mesut Ozil have all been withdrawn from the Germany squad to face England at Wembley on Tuesday, writes Sky
Germany coach Joachim Low was already without midfielder Sami Khedira after suffering ruptured knee ligaments during the friendly draw with Italy on Friday.
Bayern Munich duo Lahm and Neuer will return to Germany, while Ozil will head back to London, but not for the England fixture on Tuesday night.
Ozil barely trained with the squad before Friday’s 1-1 draw with Italy, and Low has decided not to risk the Arsenal midfielder, as he will be sidelined for the match at Wembley.
“The England game is our last chance before the World Cup to try out one or two new tactical variations and personnel,” said the Germany coach.
“Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer and Mesut Ozil are part of the absolute backbone of our team and for me, it is more important now to give other players a chance to prove themselves in these key positions, particularly against such a strong team as England.”
With Low keen to give other German players a chance in the friendly, Borussia Dortmund defender Roman Weidenfeller looks set to pick up his first cap for the national side.
