Joe Hart has received high praise from his England teammates after playing his first game in week’s following his benching by Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, Sky
Hart lined-up for England against Germany on Tuesday evening and though he could not prevent the visitors leaving Wembley with a victory, he was commended for his performance. Hart made a number of smart saves, having been left out of Friday’s defeat to Chile as manager Roy Hodgson fielded Celtic’s Fraser Forster in goal in an attempt to review his options.
Phil Jagielka formed half of the centre-back partnership in front of Hart – alongside Manchester United’s Chris Smalling – and was impressed with Hart’s display, adding it was no more than what he has come to expect from his international colleague. “I’ve backed Joe all the time, all the players have backed Joe all the time,” the Everton captain said.
“He’s been in for some criticism, some of it a little bit harsh,” Jagielka continued. “But Joe’s a big boy and that’s the only way he can prove his critics wrong by making some fantastic saves. He won’t be getting that many pats on the back from the lads because we expect him to do it.”
Smalling echoed Jagielka’s praise for the goalkeeper and thanked Hart for sparing his blushes from a corner when Smalling erred, while Andros Townsend, the Tottenham Hotspur winger who struck the post with a long-range effort in the second-half, also spoke up in favour of the City custodian.
