Hazard dropped for poor time-keeping, says Chelsea boss Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed why playmaker Eden Hazard was left out of the squad to play Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday – he forgot what time training was due to start and missed the session, Sky Sports has reported.

Rather than take to the field during the 3-0 win over the Bundesliga side, Hazard sat behind Mourinho in the stands, with the manager at first reluctant to reveal too much about why the Belgium international was not involved. Speaking after the match, Mourinho would initially only say that Hazard would return to play West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

But the subject was raised again in the post-match press conference and the manager was more forthcoming. “I don’t want to lie. He’s not injured. He forgot the time,” Mourinho said. “Let’s end the story. He’s a kid, kids make mistakes and fathers they have to be clever in the way they educate their sons. He didn’t play, he wanted to play. He’s sad because he wanted to play.

In the absence of Hazard a Samuel Eto’o brace and a late Demba Ba goal gave the Blues a comfortable victory, taking Mourinho’s team three points clear of Schalke at the top of Group E. They now also hold a four point lead over Basel, who drew with Steaua Bucharest.
