Man United’s pursuit of Everton defender Leighton Baines looks set to continue in the January transfer window, with the Premier League champions plotting to return to the Merseysiders with a new offer, according to The
Baines had topped new United manager David Moyes’s wishlist in the summer, and despite landing Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini just before the deadline shut, his pursuit of England defender Baines ultimately proved in vein and the defender remained at Goodison Park.
Moyes, however, hopes to launch a new bid in January as he looks to reinforce his defence as the Red Devils try to continue their recent resurgence in their effort to retain the Premier League crown.
With Patrice Evra looking likely to return to France in the summer, the club will need to sign a replacement in any case – and so they hope to lure Baines to give him time to settle in before taking the permanent mantle next season.
One sticking point to any potential deal, meanwhile, could see Baines seeking assurances from Moyes that he will be granted plenty of first team football at his new club. With the World Cup just around the corner, and a place in the England squad to compete with Ashley Cole up for grabs, leaving Everton for what could prove a role seeing him alternating football with Evra could hinder his chances with Roy Hodgson’s squad.
