Mancini wants Chelsea captain Terry at Galatasaray

Roberto Mancini is eager to sign Chelsea captain John Terry for Galatasaray, according to the Daily Mail, with the defender’s contract at the Premier League club due to expire at the end of the season.

Terry’s Chelsea colleagues, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, were both allowed to enter the final six months of their deals before new terms were offered and agreed and the newspaper suggests Terry is in the same boat. That gives Gala the opportunity to try and tempt Terry away from Stamford Bridge, with the promise of a longer, lucrative contract, Champions League football almost certainly guaranteed, and the chance to again play with Didier Drogba.

The Turkish league’s regulations restrict clubs from naming more than six foreign players in their matchday squad but Mancini, appointed earlier this season, has been promised funds to add to the squad he inherited from Fatih Terim. Two other former Premier League players are among Mancini’s roster – ex-Arsenal full-back Emmanuel Eboue and winger Albert Riera, previously of Liverpool.

It is speculated by the Mail that Terry could use Galatasaray’s interest as leverage to get a better deal from Chelsea – or to at least bring forward talks over his new contract at the club and have his future settled sooner. The Blues have a policy of only offering one-year contracts to players over 30, a category into which Terry falls, and means both Lampard and Cole have their contracts up for review this season as well.
