Per Mertesacker has called on his Arsenal and Germany teammate Mesut Ozil to improve his performances, ESPN
Ozil moved to Arsenal late in the transfer window, signing in at the Emirates Stadium in a club record transfer from Real Madrid. He lined up for the Gunners in the Champions League against Marseille on Tuesday and created Jack Wilshere’s second goal in the 2-0 win, but missed a penalty that Mertesacker admits could have hampered his subsequent performance.
“Mesut has made good progress. He is in good form and you can see that,” Mertesacker said. “He was always a threat [against Marseille] and he never gave up after the penalty that he missed.
“Sometimes he looks like his head is going down, but we said at half-time that we do not care (about the missed penalty). We just go on and that is what he did,” Mertesacker continued.
“We are very delighted with him, especially in the transition from defence to offence, when he is always a threat,” he added. “He can play the balls, he is the one who always goes deep all of the time. He is in good form and I think we will see more.”
Ozil and Mertesacker have helped Arsene Wenger’s side to the top of the Premier League, with a four-point lead over second place Liverpool and Chelsea, and to a promising position in the Champions League, although the London club’s progression to the next round is not yet secure.
