Mourinho right to take hard line with Hazard, says Chelsea’s Ivanovic

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has said that Jose Mourinho was correct to take a dim view of Eden Hazard missing training, ESPN has reported, after the playmaker was left out of the squad for the Champions League win over Schalke.

It has since emerged that Hazard missed a Monday training session after travelling to Lille to watch his former club play and forgetting his passport. Mourinho confirmed Hazard would be back in contention to play West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and Ivanovic believes both the punishment and Hazard’s reaction are positive signs for the squad.

It is important for the team to accept this as a discipline,” Ivanovic said. “Eden will feature in the next game. It means we are serious and we are all together and I don’t think he has a problem with that.

Ivanovic’s comments were echoed by Gary Cahill, who added: “They had their chat one to one and the situation is dealt with. Eden is a terrific player and we obviously need him in the squad and available, so of course we look forward to having him back.

Cahill continued: “The fact that players know exactly where they stand, but there are no long-term grudges, I suppose you could say that is what people talk about as the Mourinho effect.

Chelsea beat Schalke 3-0 even without Hazard, through a Samuel Eto’o brace and a Demba Ba goal, to move three points clear of the Bundesliga club in their Champions League group.
