Manchester United manager David Moyes has praised his players after a resounding 5-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen sealed the Premier League champions’ place in the next round of the Champions League, Sky
United romped to victory in Germany with goals from Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Luis Nani and an Emir Spahic own goal. The result was United’s biggest away win in the competition and extended this season’s unbeaten run to 11 games.
Moyes said after the final whistle that he has been waiting for his team to click in such a manner. “(The performance) is what I’ve been hoping to get more often – I’ve not had it as often as I’d like,” the former Everton boss said.
“There have been signs that we’ve been getting better. There have been times that we could have got three or four goals and tonight, thankfully, we did.”
Moyes also agreed that it was United’s best performance of the season so far. “I’d probably have to say it is,” the Scot conceded. “Obviously to score five goals, we’ve not done that yet, and to do it in a game of this magnitude away from home is special.”
The result leaves United three points clear at the top of Group A with one game to play, but there is a four-point gap from Moyes’ team to the side currently third in the table, the vanquished Leverkusen. That means United can finish no lower than second ahead of their final group game, at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in early December.
