Currently top of Champions League group A, Manchester United travel to Northern Spain knowing that a win will leave them just a further three points away from qualification for the knockout stages.
Man Utd have seven points from their opening three group games, with the narrow victory over Tuesday’s opponents on October 23 coming after a home win against Bayer Leverkusen, and a creditable draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk. Those two sides meet in Ukraine, and should David Moyes’ side fail to win, three points for Shakhtar would make the group considerably tighter.
The three-time European champions have shown improved form in the Premier League in recent weeks, with three wins in four games, including a comfortable success away to Fulham on Saturday, where Man Utd were 3-0 ahead after just 21 minutes, allowing them to look ahead to this match while seeing the game out at Craven Cottage.
Real Sociedad are effectively out of the running to finish in the top two, having lost all three of their group matches so far and only scoring one goal. After a shaky start where they conceded the decisive goal, they gave a good account of themselves at Old Trafford, and they won 5-0 against Osasuna in La Liga at the weekend.
The only injury problems for Man Utd are in defence, with Jonny Evans and Rafael da Silva both certain to miss out and have not made the trip.
