Southampton will be aiming to move back into the top four of the Premier League when they take on mid-table Hull City at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Saints have now gone seven Premier League games unbeaten, and their defence continues to show remarkable consistency. The bizarre goal scored by Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic denied them another clean sheet last time out, but they hit back to claim a deserved point through Jay Rodriguez’ downward header.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were knocked out of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, but his team selection suggested that success in that tournament was not one of his main priorities, so several changes will be expected from that defeat.
Hull continue to impress following their promotion from the Championship, with their form at the KC Stadium – where they have gained 11 points out of a possible 15 – keeping them safely in the top half. With a bit more luck, they might also have taken points from difficult away games against Everton and Tottenham, so they are clearly benefitting from Steve Bruce’s years of managerial experience in the Premier League.
For Southampton, Steven Davis and Pablo Osvaldo could return, after injury prevented them from playing in the last two Premier League games.
Danny Graham will return for Hull after he was ineligible to face Sunderland, while Alex Bruce should be back along with Sone Aluko.
