Stoke vs Sunderland – Premier League preview and team news

On Saturday, the Britannia Stadium will host an important game between two Premier League strugglers, Stoke City and Sunderland.

Stoke were eventually relieved to come away with a point from their previous game, the 3-3 draw against Swansea City, having thrown away a two goal lead only to be awarded a highly controversial penalty in stoppage time, which Charlie Adam converted.

Despite that, the game did show flashes of their change of philosophy, as Stoke’s second goal, scored by Stephen Ireland, came at the end of a slick passing move, though Mark Hughes will happy to end an eight game winless run here by any means possible.

Two wins from two home league games under Gustavo Poyet have put Sunderland back in touch with those above them, and they now lie just three points behind 17th placed Stoke after they achieved yet another 1-0 home win over Manchester City. The Uruguayan appears to have brought some togetherness back to Wearside after the turbulent reign of Paulo Di Canio.

Robert Huth should be fit enough to start for Stoke despite nursing a knee problem. Kenwyne Jones and Wilson Palacios may not feature after long international trips.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have no new injury worries and could be unchanged from the Man City game, with Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena serving the final game of a three-match ban.
