Tottenham Focus – Did Krul’s performance mask other problems?

Currently it appears no team can put any distance between themselves and their rivals with only six points separating first from eighth. Only two of the Premier League’s top seven [before this round of fixtures] won. Tottenham were not one of them, going down to a 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle United.

Tottenham dominated with 65% possession and managed 31 shots. One hit the woodwork, seven were blocked and 14 were on target. Tim Krul in the Newcastle goal made 14 saves in what was a deserved man of the match performance. 14 shots on target would suggest that Spurs were doing something right; no goals would suggest that they’re not. In truth this may be a combination of good saves, poor finishing and the odd unconverted scramble. However Krul’s performance perhaps shouldn’t distract from some other underlying questions.

In centre midfield Paulinho and Mousa Demb
