Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have met at White Hart Lane in all bar two of the Premier League’s 21 seasons prior to this. As they prepare to do battle in North London once again, here are some highlights from those previous Premier League meetings.
The last time that the two sides met at White Hart Lane was back in February, and as was the case so often last season, Gareth Bale stole the show with both goals for Tottenham in a 2-1 victory. He opened the scoring early on with a trademark free-kick from distance, and after Yoan Gouffran had levelled things up with a deflected shot, the Welshman scored the winner when he burst through and beat Magpies goalkeeper Tim Krul.
Newcastle caused a surprise in January 2007 when they triumphed 3-2 away to Tottenham, who were heading for fifth place in the Premier League that season. The highlight of the game was Obafemi Martins’ unbelievable strike, as his rasping shot from 25 yards flew past Paul Robinson. That goal made it 2-2, before the same player set up Nicky Butt for the winner.
Most Emphatic Victory
In February 2012, Tottenham breezed past Newcastle with surprising ease as they won 5-0, just days after Harry Redknapp had been cleared in court of tax evasion charges. Louis Saha scored twice on his debut, either side of goals from Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Niko Kranjcar before half-time. Emmanuel Adebayor had provided the assist for each of those strikes, and the Togolese striker rounded off the scoring in the second half.
Most Costly Error
While Michael Owen’s metatarsal injury was the most talked about event of the meeting in December 2005, Newcastle’s defending left a lot to be desired. Despite playing poorly, they had kept the score at 0-0 until just before half-time, where Titus Bramble’s mistake allowed Teemu Tainio to open the scoring as Tottenham were gifted a breakthrough. The home side went on to win 2-0.
