Tottenham vs Sheriff – Match preview and team news

Victory for Tottenham at home to Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday will guarantee their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Tottenham have so far strolled through this group, with wins already against Tromso, Anzhi Makhachkala, and in Tiraspol. Sheriff did give Andre Villas-Boas’ side their toughest game thus far when they met on Match day three, coming close to scoring on more than one occasion in the first half, but goals from Jan Vertonghen and Jermain Defoe ensured a Spurs victory.

While the North London club has managed 16 goals in five Europa League games, albeit against weaker opposition, they have been hard to come by in the Premier League, with only nine scored in their opening 10 games, and they drew another blank against Everton on Sunday, despite dominating the first half.

The main talking point from the game at Goodison Park was the decision to allow goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to continue despite being knocked unconscious in a challenge with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. The Frenchman should play against Sheriff, having started the previous three Europa League encounters ahead of veteran Brad Friedel.

Several changes are expected however, with Villas-Boas likely to hand starts to Christian Eriksen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Kyle Naughton and Erik Lamela among others, although Danny Rose, Sandro, and Ezekiel Fryers are all absent through injury.
