Van Persie withdraws from Holland squad ahead of friendlies

Robin van Persie has pulled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their friendlies against Japan and Colombia, Sky Sports has reported.

The Manchester United striker played 85 minutes during the fixture against his former side Arsenal on Sunday and he scored the only goal of the game, but has withdrawn from international duty with groin and toe injuries.

The Dutch medical staff decided to make the decision having heard injury complaints from the 30-year-old, who has scored seven league goals in 10 appearances for United this season.

Van Persie has eight international goals in seven appearances this year, with 41 goals in 79 total appearances for Netherlands. The 2010 FIFA World Cup runner-up will be sidelined along with Dutch teammates Jordy Clasie, Dirk Kuyt and Leroy Fer.

Holland play Japan in Genk on Saturday, before hosting Colombia in Amsterdam three days later.

Louis Van Gaal’s side qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in style, topping Group D with 28 points and going unbeaten throughout the qualifying process.
