Wenger wants Arsenal to remain focused in title challenge

Arsene Wenger has called on his Arsenal players to remain focused on the Premier League, ESPN has reported, using the opening day defeat to Aston Villa as a reminder of how easily results can go awry.

The Gunners are currently five points clear at the top of the table after a weekend where they were the only team in the top four to record a victory. Arsenal beat third place Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium while Chelsea, in second, lost at Newcastle, and Tottenham were held to a draw by Everton at Goodison Park.

It had been claimed that Arsenal were benefitting from a run of games against mid-table teams and had yet to be tested by a higher ranked side, and Wenger is eager to make sure his squad approaches the forthcoming games with the same attitude as against Liverpool.

After the Aston Villa game, if I had told you this would happen I would have to run away because you would have killed me,” Wenger said. “It shows you that things can change quickly.

Still, that should as well alert us that it can go the other way,” he continued. “We must keep good focus, continue to develop our team as there’s room for improvement.

At the moment, with 10 games played, you can say 25% of the season [has gone] and you see the first tendencies and trends but it’s still not settled. By the end of November you will have a clearer idea.

Arsenal’s next outing comes in the Champions League on Wednesday when they play Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion. Dortmund were 2-1 winners against Arsenal in the last round of Champions League fixtures but the Gunners remain top of the group, with the pair level on six points, the same tally as third-place Napoli.
