Pablo Zabaleta has demanded better defensive performances from his teammates following another away match without a clean sheet for Manchester City, Sky
The Blues suffered defeat against Gus Poyet’s Sunderland, who are in the bottom three in the Premier League. City could have gone into third with a win on Sunday. Pellegrini’s side have won just once during their last five away games in the Premier League, despite winning all of their home matches at the Etihad Stadium.
City defender Zabaleta wants the Blues to start keeping clean sheets if they are to challenge for the title. “I don’t know if it is just about our away form – when you look at the games we have played away, we have dominated all of them,” Zabaleta said.
“But it is true we cannot keep a clean sheet, and when you play away you must defend much better, and try not to concede goals. It’s not happening, every time we play away.
“There is a long way to go and we have too many games to the end, but when you lose points like that it will be really difficult to fight for the title,” the 28-year-old Argentina right-back added.
City are currently six points off top of the table Arsenal and lie in eighth position, with the visit of Tottenham Hotspur next in the Premier League. Spurs have conceded just six goals this season; only Southampton have a better defensive record in the Premier League this campaign.
