Arsenal boss Wenger out to silence doubters in Chelsea fixture

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal’s Premier League fixture with Chelsea on Monday evening is the perfect opportunity for the Gunners to prove they are genuine challengers for the title, Sky Sports has reported.

Liverpool moved to the top of the table with their 3-1 win over Cardiff City on Saturday but Arsenal will be restored to first place if they beat Jose Mourinho’s Blues. Arsenal go into the game a point behind Liverpool, with Chelsea a further two points further back.

Asked if he could understand why some observers still questioned his side’s chances of winning the title this season, Wenger admitted that he could. “Yes – we haven’t won the league for a long time, so that is why they question us,” the long-serving manager said.

It is not (about nine seasons) without winning a trophy, it is without winning the Premier League,” Wenger continued. “If you win the League Cup, it does not change anything. It is the Premier League that is the most important thing, and we haven’t won it for nine years.

At the moment everybody still questions us, even more after our defeat at (Manchester) City,” he added. “But I see the game at City the other way round, that we can have even more belief after the game at City.

Arsenal conceded six goals to City in their last outing, hitting three in reply and suffering their third league defeat of the season, while Chelsea go into the London derby on the back of a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Crystal Palace. Mourinho’s side are fifth, a point behind Everton and three adrift of top spot.
