Two consecutive away victories, coupled with successive defeats for Liverpool, have sent Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League, a point clear of Manchester City. A 3-1 triumph at West Ham United on Boxing Day was followed by Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United, secured by Olivier Giroud’s second half header.
After the win at St. James’ Park, Wenger admitted that it was too early to eye the club’s first Premier League title since 2004. “We believe in ourselves and we are determined to give our best, absolutely, and to turn back on the season at the end and think we have given our best,” he said.
“I hope it will be enough, of course, but it’s a long way to go. It’s too early to say that.”
The Gunners begin 2014 with a home game against managerless Cardiff City, and a trip to Aston Villa follows an FA Cup tie against arch rivals Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium.
