Aston Villa striker Benteke a “victim of his own success”, says boss Lambert

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert believes Christian Benteke’s current goal drought is his own fault, having set high standards for himself since bursting on the scene last year, writes The Daily Star.

The Villa striker has failed to score in his previous seven matches, but will hope to put an end to the draught tonight against Southampton.

“I’m pretty sure Christian is a victim of his own success. But it’s down to himself, he’s created the high standard,” said Lambert.

“It’s a challenge. He must bounce back and I’m pretty sure he will.

“All top-class strikers have barren spells. He will come through it – he just needs a goal.

The 23-year-old made an impressive start to his career at Villa Park, scoring 19 goals in 35 league appearances last season.

But a recent dry spell has seen Benteke halted on just four goals thus far this campaign as Lambert’s Villa sit mid-table as they head to St Mary’s stadium on Wednesday evening.

Lambert’s side will head to the South coast having drawn three of their previous four matches in the Premier League, the latest coming at Villa Park against Sunderland on Saturday.

Southampton were beaten 3-1 on Sunday at Stamford Bridge having taken the lead after just 13 seconds, but Saints haven’t lost at home in the league since April.
