Chelsea could be looking to have a second crack at luring Wayne Rooney away from Man United after it emerged that the England star is yet to discuss a contract renewal at Old Trafford, according to The
Rooney was a wanted man at Stamford Bridge in the summer, with the Blues only giving up hope of signing the former Everton star in the final days of the transfer window, opting instead to sign Samuel Eto’o for a cut price.
Rooney had initially seemed destined to leave the Premier League champions in the summer, but a reunion with former manager David Moyes lead to fresh discussions and the 28-year-old has enjoyed a sparkling season thus far and appears to relish his partnership with Dutch striker Robin van Persie.
Rooney’s present deal expires in a little over 18 months, and so Chelsea could be hoping that United would rather cash in on their attacker than lose him for nothing at the end of the 2014-15 season, unless of course they successfully negotiate a new deal before then.
Rooney would be free to talk to other clubs about a free transfer from January 2015, and so United will likely have a decision made well before then, but this gives Chelsea hope that they can be successful at their second attempt to court Rooney.
