Chelsea manager Mourinho wants new contract for Cole

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole could be offered a new contract at Chelsea if manager Jose Mourinho gets his way, according to The Mirror.

Cole has dropped out of the first team picture at Chelsea this season, but boss Mourinho still feels the former Arsenal defender has plenty to offer the Blues and should be given a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

With Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta ensuring his status as preferred left back at Chelsea this season, and Cole being forced to play out of position, rumours resumed from last season that Cole could be set to finish his career elsewhere, but the Portuguese manager – who was the man responsible for signing Cole in 2006 – believes that the 106-times capped Cole will “naturally” be offered a new contract.

Mourinho said: “Naturally he will get a contract because he’s a valuable player for us. Even if you are not playing every game and you are not a first-choice player, like he was always, I don’t think sometimes it means that you are not well, you are not in well conditions, you are not deserving a new contract.

“But the way he trains is super professional, as always. He’s a fantastic trainer, fantastic professional. When he’s on the bench behind me, I can feel that he’s there to win, even if he’s not on the pitch.

“I feel he’s fine. And I think tomorrow he’s going to show that he’s fine. He starts tomorrow.”

Cole seems set to regain his first team place for the Champions League tie with Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday evening.
