Neither Chelsea nor Swansea City have truly convinced this season, but the Blues come into this game just two points behind leaders Liverpool.
In some ways, Chelsea’s trip to Arsenal on Monday was a containment exercise, but manager Jose Mourinho was still left to rue a lack of aggression going forward as few chances were created by either side. However, avoiding defeat was imperative, and it keeps the West London club in the running in what is a very close title race.
Swansea again fell short at home on Sunday as they were deservedly beaten by Everton, who looked the superior side throughout. Michael Laudrup’s team did limit the Toffees to few clear chances, but struggled to create many of their own as their inconsistent campaign continued. Whereas Chelsea have struggled to convert chances, the Swans have struggled to create them, and as a result they have fallen into the bottom half.
Michael Essien returns for Chelsea after a one-match ban, while Marco van Ginkel is not expected to be back from injury until towards the end of the season.
For Swansea, goalkeeper Michel Vorm continues to recover from a knee operation, Nathan Dyer is also out, and Miguel Michu is doubtful. Angel Rangel returns from suspension and should replace Dwight Tiendalli at right-back.
