Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed injured duo Darron Gibson and Arouna Kone will need replacing in next month’s transfer window, writes Sky
Kone, who is suffering with a serious knee problem, could be out for the rest of the season, while Gibson is also expected to be sidelined for the majority of the campaign.
With a busy run of fixtures coming up, Martinez has no doubt the two players will need replacing as the January transfer window looms.
“We are going to use the window in January to try to help the team because we lost two players for the long term,” said the Spaniard.
“Arouna and Darron are two very important players for us so we will try to see if we can identify one or two players that can help the group. We have been working hard to identify who can help the group and that is what we are looking for in January.”
Despite Kone’s rehabilitation process already underway, Martinez is doubtful the striker will be involved again for the Toffees this campaign.
“Arouna started the first part of his recovery and it is going to be long-term, as expected,” he said. “I don’t think we are going to see Arouna this season. If we can get him back for the final two months he will have done really well.
“In the same manner we are hoping we can see Darron Gibson before the season ends but clearly it is a long-term injury as well.”
Kone had not scored for Everton this season before his injury after five goalless appearances, while Romelu Lukaku has been prolific for the Toffees, scoring eight goals in 10 matches.
Darron Gibson also had little impact before his knee ligament injury, having made just one substitute appearance during the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.
Martinez will be encouraged after young forward Gerard Deulofeu got off the mark for the club after 10 appearances, having scored his first goal for the club against Stoke City in the 4-0 win at Goodison Park.
