Liverpool to make January move for West Ham midfielder Diame

Liverpool could be set to make a surprise move to lure West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame to Anfield, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The 26-year-old moved to West Ham in 2012 from Wigan, and has made almost 50 appearances for the Hammers. With Steven Gerrard reportedly out for another four to six weeks, Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring some new metal to his midfield, and wants to sign Diame to help maintain the Reds’ impressive league standing.

Diame made his international debut for Senegal in 2011, and has gone on to earn 19 caps so far. His consistent rise as a figure of steel and commitment could have paid off, as a move to Anfield would offer the prospect of regular European competition, though the Reds failed to qualify for continental competitions this season.

With their position near the top of the table, however, Rodgers appears keen to avoid a repeat. The club have been linked with several reinforcements in the January transfer window, but Diame would likely provide more than adequate cover even after skipper Gerrard returns to the side.
