In-form Manchester United and attack-minded Tottenham meet in an intriguing game for New Year’s Day’s late kick-off.
Man Utd have now won six games in a row in all competitions, continuing their ominous rise up the Premier League table, but they rode their luck considerably over their previous two games away to Hull City and Norwich City. They did, however, show great character and spirit in both games, and they got the breaks they needed, such as the ricochet which led to Danny Welbeck’s winner at Carrow Road.
Tim Sherwood picked up his first home win in charge of Tottenham on Sunday as he begins to implement his attacking tactics. It was a very comprehensive victory also, 3-0 over Stoke City, and they will not revert to a more conservative approach for the trip to Old Trafford. They will no longer fear this fixture, after they memorably won the corresponding game last season.
Wayne Rooney should return for Man Utd, who will definitely be without Robin van Persie, Marouan Fellaini, Nani and Phil Jones.
Tottenham should welcome back Jermain Defoe after he was ruled out of the Stoke game, but Younes Kaboul, Sandro, Paulinho and Andros Townsend will all be missing.
