Mourinho confirms new deals for Chelsea trio

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that long-serving trio Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry will all be offered new contracts ahead of next season, reports ESPN.

All three are out of contract in the summer, but Mourinho insisted they each have important roles to play in the future of the club. He said: “It’s a situation that doesn’t worry me, doesn’t worry the club and, I think, doesn’t worry the players. Their desire to play for this club, nobody has doubts about it. We want them to feel free to express and to enjoy these last years of their careers.

“Everything is very calm and at the end of the season, probably before that, the club will sit with them, the offer will be on the table. In this moment the situation is very, very clear. They trust the club, we trust the players. And, for sure, without conflict, the best decision for us and for them will be taken.”

Terry and Lampard have both been at Stamford Bridge for well over a decade, with the latter being the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. The duo have been more regular members of the starting XI this season, since Mourinho – who was manager in two of their three title winning campaigns – returned for his second spell as Chelsea boss.

Cole has been a regular throughout his time at Chelsea, which began in 2005, but in recent weeks has found himself out of the team, with Cesar Azpilicueta preferred in the left-back position since the beginning of November.

Mourinho also confirmed that he spoke to Lampard towards the end of last season to help convince him to stay at Chelsea. He added: “At that time I was Real Madrid manager, not Chelsea manager, and I gave my opinion. Just my opinion, as a friend at that time. The opinion was to wait. Trust yourself, wait, play.

‘If somebody has doubts, try to show in the last part of the season how important you still can be for the club and do what you really want to do. If you want to stay wait, because probably you are going to stay. If, at the end of the day, you are not staying, you are free to decide.”
