Two sides from opposite ends of the country who have made impressive starts to the Premier League season meet on Tyneside on Saturday.
Newcastle pulled off a superb result last time out with Yohan Cabaye’s second half strike sealing a first win away to Manchester United for 41 years, which was a fine recovery after losing 3-0 at Swansea City just three days earlier. The defeat in Wales proved to be nothing more than a blip, as victory over the champions made it five wins from six in the league, leaving them in seventh position.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Saints are a place and three points behind their opponents after they earned a creditable draw against Manchester City, a result which ended a run of three straight defeats. They could easily have beaten City at home for the second season running, but they were unable to make their second half pressure count, and add to Pablo Osvaldo’s wonderful equaliser.
Cabaye, the match-winner at Old Trafford, will miss out here after picking up his fifth booking of the season in that game. Newcastle will also be without Ryan Taylor.
Southampton are still without goalkeeper Artur Boruc, midfielder Victor Wanyama and winger Guillermo Do Prado, but they are hoping that Morgan Schneiderlin can recover from a groin injury in time to feature.
