Southampton will be aiming to recover from two successive defeats, which have seen them drop to seventh in the Premier League, when they host mid-table Aston Villa on Wednesday.
Despite typically hard working performances at both Arsenal and Chelsea, the Saints came away with nothing to show for their efforts in either game. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will have been frustrated by their failure to build on Jay Rodriguez’ first minute goal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and the uncharacteristically poor defending in the second half which allowed Chelsea to turn the game around.
Aston Villa produced one of their poorest displays of the season on Saturday, against lowly Sunderland, and were thankful for the Black Cats’ wastefulness in a goalless draw. Their best performances this season have been away from home, and Southampton will be wary of their ability on the counter-attack, with the pacy Gabriel Agbonlahor having returned from injury.
Southampton will be without goalkeeper Artur Boruc for several weeks, after the Pole suffered a hand injury at Chelsea. Either Paulo Gazzaniga or Kelvin Davis will come in for a side who are also without Morgan Schneiderlin, Daniel Fox, Guillermo Do Prado and Gaston Ramirez.
Andreas Weimann is a doubt for Villa, after he picked up a hamstring injury against Sunderland. The visitors are also without defenders Joe Bennett and Jores Okore.
