After a hard-fought win over Liverpool on Sunday, Chelsea take on a Southampton side looking for its first home win since November.
Having seen his side coast to a 3-0 win at Cardiff City on Boxing Day, there was more disappointment for Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino on Sunday as a largely frustrating December ended with defeat at Everton. They competed well at Goodison Park, but their efficient pressing game deserted them for Romelu Lukaku’s winning goal, leaving them ninth, six points behind nearest rivals Newcastle United.
Chelsea picked a good time to produce one of their best performances of the season as they defeated Liverpool in a Premier League match for the first time since May 2010, although their match-winner, Samuel Eto’o, was the subject of controversy. The Blues responded exceptionally well to going behind early on, and the result ensured that they kept up the pace with leaders Arsenal.
Pochettino is expected to rotate his Southampton side, and he must decide whether to keep Kelvin Davis in goal ahead of Paulo Gazzaniga. Victor Wanyama and Guillermo Do Prado are injured, but Pablo Osvaldo could return.
Ramires returns for Chelsea following a one-match ban, but David Luiz will now serve a suspension of his own. Branislav Ivanovic is a doubt after being forced off against Liverpool.
