After they ended their barren run away from home at West Bromwich Albion, Manchester City will be looking to inflict a fourth straight defeat on Southampton.
Defeat against Aston Villa on Wednesday was Southampton’s first at home since April, and it left manager Mauricio Pochettino somewhat bemused after seeing his side dominate possession and territory for long periods, only to lose to Fabian Delph’s wonderful strike from long range. The Argentine will come into this game hoping for a repeat of last season’s 3-1 win over Man City.
There was relief for Manuel Pellegrini on Wednesday as the 2012 champions clinched only their second away win of the season in the Premier League. It was a largely comfortable evening at the Hawthorns, although West Brom pulled two goals back late on. Whatever happens, Man City can expect a stern test at St. Mary’s, despite Southampton’s recent dip in form.
Southampton have several injury problems to contend with. Paulo Gazzaniga will continue in goal in place of Artur Boruc, while Pochettino is waiting on the fitness of Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Wanyama after both were forced off against Aston Villa. Guillermo Do Prado and Gaston Ramirez are both definitely ruled out.
Captain Vincent Kompany returned for Man City on Wednesday and came through unscathed, but they are still without David Silva and Matija Nastasic.
