After the Capital One Cup defeat to West Ham United, Tim Sherwood takes caretaker-charge of Tottenham again for the tricky Premier League trip to Southampton.
The Saints come into this without a win in five matches, although four of those have come against sides in the top six. Last time out, they produced a strong display at Newcastle United to earn a point with a goal by the in-form Jay Rodriguez, and having lost just once at home in the league this season, Mauricio Pochettino will fancy his team’s chances of ending their winless streak.
Tottenham did the double over Southampton last season, but the scorers in those games, Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey, have both moved on and the current Spurs side has struggled to score throughout 2013-14. That run, coupled with humiliatingly heavy defeats to Manchester City and Liverpool cost Andre Villas-Boas his job as manager, despite them lying just eight points off top spot.
Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne faces a late fitness test, but Guillermo Do Prado and Victor Wanyama are both out. Adam Lallana could return after a minor injury.
Paulinho is still absent for Tottenham after his sending off against Liverpool, but Michael Dawson returns from a one-match ban. Younes Kaboul, Andros Townsend and Jan Vertonghen are all unavailable through injury.
