Gustavo Poyet will be hoping to make it three home wins out of three as Sunderland boss, when his side take on his former club Chelsea on Wednesday.
Sunderland missed a great opportunity to move to only three points from safety on Saturday, when they failed to make the most of their superiority at Aston Villa, where they missed one gilt-edged chance, and saw another come back off the crossbar. As it is, with the gap at five points, their position remains precarious, but they have undoubtedly shown signs of improvement since Poyet took charge in October.
It took until the second half for Chelsea to respond to going a goal down to Southampton after just 13 seconds. Despite the nightmare start, they recovered well to take a deserved win, restricting the Saints to very few chances. That Demba Ba got his name on the scoresheet will be pleasing to manager Jose Mourinho, as the Blues moved up to second in the Premier League.
The hosts will assess captain John O’Shea, who sustained a muscle injury at Villa Park, but David Vaughan is certain to miss out.
Chelsea will be without Oscar, who was forced off against Southampton with an ankle problem. David Luiz continues to be sidelined by a knee injury, but Samuel Eto’o is back in training and could feature.
