Lowly Sunderland will be hoping to recover from their first home defeat under Gustavo Poyet, against Chelsea on Wednesday, when they take on Tottenham.
The home side came up against a Chelsea side in superb form, but caused them enough problems to keep them holding on to a 4-3 victory right until the final whistle, making the most of the Blues’ inability to defend set-pieces. It provided many more signs of the progress that is being made under Poyet, and Sunderland are now looking much more capable of staving off the threat of relegation.
Tottenham came from behind at London rivals Fulham, with two long range goals which earned a much-needed first win since October, with the pressure having increased on manager Andre Villas-Boas. This is another important game for the Portuguese as Spurs look to make up ground on the top four, with difficult looking fixtures against Liverpool and Southampton coming up.
John O’Shea should start again for Sunderland after coming through the game against Chelsea, but David Vaughan is still missing.
Tottenham are still without injured trio Christian Eriksen, Danny Rose and Harry Kane, while Roberto Soldado is expected to come in for Jermain Defoe.
