West Bromwich Albion will be looking for only their fourth Premier League win of the season when they host Newcastle United on Wednesday.
The Baggies are hoping that 2014 brings more success than the previous calendar year, during which they picked up a meagre total of 34 points in 37 outings, which is relegation form. Caretaker boss Keith Downing will be hoping on the three draws he has achieved so far here, and will be encouraged by Nicolas Anelka’s double at the weekend at West Ham United, although it was his celebrations which made the headlines.
Newcastle slipped to a rare defeat on Sunday as Arsenal triumphed at St. James’ Park. They struggled to carve out chances throughout a largely disjointed match, but that it was only their second defeat since the end of October shows how far Alan Pardew’s side have come in such a short space of time, as their last visit to the Hawthorns came when they were fighting for their top-flight status.
The hosts could make some changes to their starting XI, and are hoping that strikers Victor Anichebe and Shane Long can return from injury.
Ryan Taylor is a long-term absentee for Newcastle, who also have relatively few injuries to contend with at present.
