2022 World Cup will not take place in summer, claims Valcke

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke has said that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will not be held in the summer ass was originally planned, ITV Sport has reported.

Since Qatar was controversially awarded the 2022 tournament in September 2010, the debate has been about whether to move the event from its traditional summer staging to winter, due to the searing heat of the gulf state throughout June and July.

Many key figures in world football have conceded that the World Cup should be held in winter to ensure safety for players and supporters, but others have pointed to the disruption it would cause to the domestic football calendar if it were moved.

The organisers of Qatar 2022 have always insisted that they would be ready to host the tournament in the summer or winter, but in an interview with radio station France Info, Valcke appeared to confirm that this tournament will not take place in the summer months.

He said: “It will not be in June or July. Frankly I think it’ll be played between November 15 and January 15 at the latest. If you play between November 15 and the end of the year that’s when the weather is at its most favourable.”
