Arsenal are believed to be in “advanced talks” with Schalke over the reported transfer of Julian Draxler, but are reluctant to match the £37m asking price, according to The
The Gunners are hoping to have the deal done and dusted by the end of the week, but are hoping to get their man for around £30m. Schalke, however, are holding out for the £37m the German starlet has in his contract as a release clause.
That clause does not come into effect until the summer, but Arsenal were planning on signing the player during the current window. Draxler himself stated earlier in the week that he has set the Emirates as his preferred destination should he leave Schalke, with Arsene Wenger hoping to convert the attacking midfielder into a striker in much the same vein as he did with Thierry Henry.
That would be a long-term strategy, however, and Wenger wants Draxler at the club this month and utilise his talents as a midfielder for the rest of this season.
Should the deal go ahead, Draxler would join compatriots Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski in north London.
He has played for Schalke since making his professional debut in 2011, and has gone on to score 14 goals in 89 games thus far for Die Knappen.
