Lee Cattermole has praised Sunderland team-mate Adam Johnson after the former Man City winger starred in the Black Cats’ 4-1 win over Fulham at the weekend, according to SAFC.com.
Johnson’s performances against Fulham and in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Man United has led to reports that the 26-year-old could be pulling himself back into England contention ahead of this summer’s World Cup, and Cattermole believes that the performances are just rewards for the star.
He said: “Adam’s had his ups and downs, I think he’s done well in the cup games and he scored a good goal, he came on against Manchester United and he was positive, he took that into the game against Fulham when he started.
“Fulham were on the back foot straight away. Adam proved to be a handful and I think they struggled to cope with him.
“[The hat-trick] is great for the lad and he deserves it.”
Sunderland next host Southampton as they hope to continue their Premier League revival, before travelling to Old Trafford for the second leg of that semi-final. They take a 2-1 advantage with them to Manchester, and if they are to advance they would be reaching their first major cup final since losing to Liverpool in 1992.
